How to look up a Minecraft block ID

  1. Search any way you know it

By display name, by namespaced id, or by the numeric id from before the flattening.

  2. Filter the category

Building, ores, redstone, combat, tools, armor, food, materials and misc each narrow the table.

  3. Read the row

Stack size, hardness, blast resistance, the tool it needs and whether the block is renewable.

  4. Copy the id

The namespaced id is the form commands, loot tables and plugin configs expect.

How It Works

Search all block and item IDs across versions.

How to Use the Block & Item Database

This database contains a curated collection of important Minecraft blocks and items with their key properties. Use the search bar to find any block or item by its name, namespaced ID, or legacy numeric ID. The category filter lets you quickly browse specific groups like ores, redstone components, building blocks, tools, armor, food, and raw materials. Click any row to see full details in an expanded panel. Blast resistance and hardness say what a block survives and how long it takes to mine; what it costs to make one is in the crafting recipe viewer.

Understanding Block Properties

Each entry displays several important properties. Stack size tells you how many of an item fit in one inventory slot (most blocks stack to 64, while tools and armor stack to 1). Blast resistance indicates how well a block withstands explosions, with obsidian at 1,200 being one of the highest. Hardness determines how long a block takes to mine. The tool column shows which tool is required or most efficient for breaking the block. The renewable column indicates whether the item can be obtained through renewable means like farming, mob drops, or trading.

Common Use Cases

Players use this tool to look up namespaced IDs for commands and data packs, compare blast resistance values when building creeper-proof structures, check which tools are needed for specific blocks, and determine whether a resource is renewable for long-term survival planning. Server administrators reference the database for shop pricing and plugin configurations. Map makers use the IDs for command blocks and functions. The legacy numeric ID column helps players working with older versions or converting between ID formats. An ID on its own is only half a command, and the command generator wraps it in a working give with its components, while the enchantment lookup says which of these items accept which enchantment and up to what level.

How Minecraft identifies things

Namespaced IDEvery block and item is a namespace and a path. The vanilla namespace can be left out in commands, and a datapack or mod cannot.
No more numbersVersion 1.13 removed numeric IDs and data values. Any guide that still says a number and a colon is describing a game from before that.
Blocks against itemsThey are separate registries with names that do not always match. What you place and what you hold can be two different identifiers for the same thing.
Block statesA block carries states such as facing or half, written in square brackets after the ID. Leave one out and the game uses its default.
ComponentsSince 1.20.5 an item carries components rather than one NBT blob, so custom names and enchantments are written in square brackets too.
TagsA hash in front of an ID means a whole group, which is how one command can target every log or every wool colour at once.

All 109 identifiers exist in Java Edition 26.2, checked 8 August 2026: 108 stand on their own in the block and item lists of the client jar, and red_bed sits in the bed colour collection there.

Two sums off this table: what it all weighs, and what actually survives a creeper

Every row here carries a stack size, a hardness and a blast resistance. Added up and divided against each other they answer two questions the individual rows do not.

one full stack of everything = the stack sizes added togetherslots needed = one per entry; a chest is 27 slots and a double chest 54toughness against mining speed = blast resistance divided by hardness
A full stack of every entry on this page27 entries stack to 11 stacks to 1681 stack to 645,227 items, and they need 109 slots, so three double chests with 53 slots to spare
Anvil against obsidiananvil: 1200 resistance over 5 hardnessobsidian: 1200 over 50the same 1200 against an explosion, while the anvil breaks ten times faster
The two entries that go the other waypiston and sticky piston sit at 0.5 resistance against 1.5 hardness, the only ratio below 1 in the 109, so they are slower to mine than they are to blow up

Hardness and blast resistance are separate fields and people read them as one. Ancient debris is the clearest case: 30 hardness makes it slow to mine, and 1200 resistance is why it is still lying there after the bed goes off. Mining time tells you nothing about what a creeper leaves standing.

Frequently Asked Questions

Questions about IDs
  • Why does the ID from an old guide not work?

Because it is a number. Numeric IDs and data values were dropped in 1.13 in favour of names, so a give with a number and a colon has not parsed for years.

  • Why does give fail on a block I can clearly place?

Some blocks have no item form and some items place a differently named block. Those are two registries, so the identifier that works for setblock is not always the one give wants.

  • What are the square brackets after an ID?

Block states on a block, item components on an item. They pin down which variant you mean, and anything you leave out falls back to the default.

  • What does a hash in front of an ID mean?

A tag, which is a named group of blocks or items. It lets one command cover a whole family and it is how the game itself keeps recipes working across every wood type.
