How to check a Minecraft crafting recipe
Find the item
Search by the result you want or by an ingredient you already have a chest full of.
Filter the category
Tools, armor, redstone, storage, building, food, decorative, combat and transport each narrow the list.
Read the grid
The grid shows the exact placement. A shapeless recipe is marked as such, and there the placement does not matter.
Count the output
A recipe that gives more than one item shows the count on the result, which is what decides how much of an ingredient you need.
How It Works
Look up any crafting recipe instantly.

How to Use the Crafting Recipe Viewer
This tool provides a visual crafting reference for Minecraft Java Edition. Browse or search through recipes using the search bar, which matches item names, output names, and ingredient names. Use the category filter to narrow results to specific groups like tools, armor, redstone components, food, or building blocks. Click any recipe card to view the full 3x3 crafting grid layout with all required ingredients and output quantity. The ingredient list says what to gather; which tool breaks each of those blocks fastest is in the block and item database.
Understanding Recipe Types
Recipes come in two types: shaped and shapeless. Shaped recipes require ingredients to be placed in specific positions on the crafting grid. Shapeless recipes allow ingredients to be placed in any arrangement. The viewer marks shapeless recipes with a tag. The ingredient list below the grid shows exactly how many of each material you need, making it easy to gather resources before crafting. The output section shows the item produced and its quantity per craft.
Common Use Cases
New players use this tool to learn crafting patterns for essential items like tools, armor, and torches. Experienced players reference it for less common recipes like observers, comparators, and brewing stands. The search functionality makes it quick to find any recipe by typing an ingredient name. For instance, searching "diamond" shows all recipes requiring diamonds. Each recipe includes a give command that you can copy for use in creative mode or on servers with command access. Those give commands can be widened with names, lore and components in the command generator, and once the tool is crafted the enchantment lookup says what may go on it.
How the game matches a recipe
| Shaped | The pattern matters but its position does not. A shape in the top left corner of a 3 by 3 grid crafts the same as the identical shape in the bottom right. |
|---|---|
| Mirrored | A shaped recipe also matches its left to right mirror, which is why a tool works whichever way round you build it. |
| Shapeless | Position is ignored entirely. Only the set of ingredients counts, so dye mixing and repairs work wherever you drop the items. |
| Grid size | Two by two in the inventory, three by three at a crafting table. A recipe that needs a 3 wide shape simply cannot be made in the inventory. |
| Ingredient tags | Some slots accept a whole family, so any plank works where a plank is asked for. Where the item itself has a wood or a colour variant the output follows the ingredient, which is why birch planks give a birch sign and not an oak one. |
| Containers | A bucket or a bottle used as an ingredient is usually returned empty rather than consumed, which is why some recipes look free. |
All 94 grids were compared on 8 August 2026 with the recipe files that come with version 26.2. Every output on this page exists there as a crafting recipe, and every output count matches the count written in its own file.
Frequently Asked Questions
Questions about crafting
Why does my recipe not work in the inventory grid?
Because it needs three columns or three rows. The inventory offers a 2 by 2 grid, so anything wider or taller than that has to go to a crafting table.
Does the position in the grid matter?
Only the shape does. Slide the whole pattern anywhere in the grid and it still matches, as long as the blocks keep the same arrangement relative to each other.
Why does the recipe book not show a recipe I know?
Recipes unlock as you pick up the items they use. Until the trigger fires the recipe exists and works if you build it by hand, it simply is not listed yet.
Can I use any wood type in a recipe?
Only where the slot asks for a family. Then the output takes the wood you used, so birch planks give a birch boat. Recipes that need matching wood, such as boats and signs, refuse a mixed grid.
