How to look up a Minecraft enchantment
Filter by item
Choose the sword, bow, pickaxe or armour piece and the list drops to what can actually go on it.
Split off the treasure
Treasure enchantments never come out of an enchanting table, which is why they have their own filter.
Read the max level
Every entry gives the highest level the game allows and what that level changes.
Check the conflicts
The incompatible list is what stops two enchantments sitting on the same item, whatever order you apply them in.
How It Works
Browse all enchantments, max levels and compatibility.

How to Use the Enchantment Lookup Tool
This tool lists the 43entries in the enchantment registry of Java Edition 26.2. The max level, the item list and the conflicts of each one were compared with the game files on 8 August 2026, so Lunge, the enchantment a spear can carry, is in here as well. You can search enchantments by name or by their namespaced ID (for example, typing "sharp" will find Sharpness). Use the item type dropdown to filter enchantments by the gear they apply to, such as helmets, swords, or boots. The treasure filter helps you quickly find enchantments that can only be obtained from loot chests, fishing, trading, or specific structures rather than from an enchanting table.
Understanding Enchantment Details
Click on any enchantment card to view its full details including maximum level, applicable items, incompatible enchantments, and whether it is treasure-only or a curse. The incompatible enchantments list is especially useful when planning your gear, as certain enchantments cannot be combined on the same item. The game keeps one damage group that no item can carry twice: Sharpness, Smite, Bane of Arthropods, Impaling, Density and Breach all rule each other out, which is why a trident with Impaling can never also hold Sharpness. Click the namespaced ID to copy it for use in commands. The fastest way to see a refusal for yourself is a test item with both enchantments on it, which the command generator writes as a single give command.
Common Use Cases
Players use this tool to plan optimal enchantment setups for armor, weapons, and tools before spending experience points. Server administrators reference the enchantment IDs for plugin configurations and custom enchant commands. Speed-runners check which enchantments are available on which items. Whether you need to know the max level of Unbreaking, which items accept Mending, or what conflicts with Protection, this lookup has every detail in one place. The mace enchantments Breach, Density and Wind Burst are in the list, and so is the spear enchantment Lunge. Every item these entries refer to has an ID in the block and item database, and the crafting recipe viewer shows how that tool or armour piece is made before it ever reaches the table.
How enchanting is actually limited
| Bookshelves | Fifteen around the table, one block of air between, is the maximum. A sixteenth adds nothing at all. |
|---|---|
| Lapis | One to three per enchant, matching the row you pick. The level cost and the lapis cost are separate prices for the same click. |
| Treasure only | Mending, frost walker, soul speed, swift sneak, wind burst and the curses never appear at a table. They come from trades, loot or fishing. |
| Prior work penalty | Every anvil use doubles the surcharge on the next one for that item, independent of what you are adding. |
| Too expensive | Survival mode refuses any anvil job priced above 39 levels. That limit is what stops an item from being combined forever. |
| Conflicts | Enchantments in the same family exclude each other: one damage type on a sword, one protection type on armour, silk touch against fortune. |
The enchantment folder of Java Edition 26.2 holds 43 files and this page holds 43 entries. On 8 August 2026 the two were matched one for one, and every maximum level here is the max_level field out of its own file.
The most an item can carry, worked out from this table
Every conflict on this page was fed back through itself. For each item the table gives the enchantments that may go on it, then the largest group of those that do not exclude one another, and the levels that group adds up to. Nobody has to guess at the ceiling any more.
an enchantment fits an item when it names that item, or when it names all equippable items, or when it repairs anything with durability and the item wears outa group is legal when no two members list each other as a conflictlevels = the maximum level of every member added togetherOf the 43 entries, 22 conflict with nothing at all. All the friction sits in 27 pairs, and those pairs are almost entirely damage against damage and protection against protection. That is why a full set of armour is easier to finish than one perfect pickaxe.
Frequently Asked Questions
Questions about enchanting
Why does my anvil say too expensive?
The job costs 40 levels or more, and survival refuses that outright. The prior work penalty doubles with every use, so the fix is to combine in a better order, not to gather more levels.
How many bookshelves do I need?
Fifteen, with a gap of one block between them and the table. Anything past fifteen is decoration, and a torch or a block in the gap cuts a shelf out of the count.
Why can I not get mending from the table?
It is a treasure enchantment, and those are excluded from the table by design. Villager trades, fishing and chest loot are the only sources.
Can I put two protection enchantments on one piece?
Not in survival. Protection, fire protection, blast protection and projectile protection all exclude each other, so armour carries exactly one of the four.
